Since its establishment, the center has expanded and strengthened relationships with in-country and international organizations in various sectors to serve as Korea's only technical collaborative platform specialized in the Mekong region. It contributes to resolving water issues in Mekong countries and supports the Korean government's foreign policy toward the Mekong region.
In June 2023, the Korea-Mekong Water Center changed its name from Korea-Mekong Water Resources Management Collaborative Research Center to a more concise name to better convey its vision, to be more familiar to the public, and also to broaden its scope of work and play a more significant role in Mekong-RoK cooperation.
